TIE A YELLOW RIBBON FOR THE CUBAN 5!
September 12, 2013 marked 15 years since the unjust imprisonment of the Cuban 5. It also marked the beginning of the “Yellow Ribbon for the Cuban 5” campaign initiated by René Gonzalez, one of the Cuban 5 Heroes.
René returned to Cuba in June 2013 after finishing his prison sentence, and began the campaign to appeal to people in the US by using a popular song and American folk tradition of tying a yellow ribbon to a tree to show devotion to the return of a loved one.
René asked the people of Cuba to saturate the island with yellow ribbons as a symbol of their desire to see all of their 5 Heroes return, and they responded in full force! People around the world also took on the campaign, and yellow ribbons have been tied in hundreds of places across all 7 continents.
The Free the Cuban 5 Committee – Vancouver also responded enthusiastically to the call, and we continue to bring the Yellow Ribbon campaign to the streets of British Columbia (BC). We began by organizing and coordinating 7 events in 4 days across BC. Since then the yellow ribbons have become a constant part of our work. From banner drops, picket actions, forums, movie presentations, cultural events, and petition drives the Yellow Ribbon campaign has been an exciting way to generate interest and solidarity with the Cuban 5 Heroes. There is now even a constant presence of yellow ribbons tied in front of the US Consulate in Vancouver!
We encourage everybody everywhere to join the “Yellow Ribbon for the Cuban 5” campaign, and to continue working for the freedom of all of our 5 Cuban Heroes. Contact us to get involved, and let’s continue to educate, organize, and mobilize to “Free All the Cuban 5 NOW!”
